Verbatim vs. Intelligent Verbatim

A verbatim transcript retains every utterance of the speaker, and may even include references to any sounds heard other than the speaker's voice. This would include:

  • verbal pauses (umms, ers, etc)

  • verbal tics, such as when a speaker begins every sentence with the word "so" or "like"

  • false starts, such as when a speaker says a few words, pauses, and then restarts the sentence.

  • rambling sentences that seem to have no end

  • paragraphs are non-existent or break based on time-stamps rather than content

Verbatim transcripts are useful for psychiatrists in patient sessions, lawyers interviewing clients
or witnesses, or TV editors in choosing what parts of an interview to include in a video.

BUT...they aren't very "readable," which is what your community is looking for!

Intelligent verbatim transcripts "fix" those problems!

  • Verbal pauses are completely eliminated

  • verbal tics are judiciously eliminated, meaning that there are some places where they will be retained for sense and others where they will be removed because they interrupt the speaker's actual meaning.

  • False starts are also judiciously evaluated. In some cases, the false start is a valuable insight to the
speaker's thought process. In others, it's simply repetitive or misleading.

  • Rambling sentences will be lightly and almost imperceptibly edited into simpler sentences make for
an easier reading experience for your community.

  • Long passages are broken up into paragraphs based on content, not time.
